The Fitness Artist – Bethany Nelson

I am so happy to share Bethany Nelson a.k.a “Peanut” interview.  I haven’t met her in person but her fun, bubbly and genuine personality shines right through her beautiful pictures.   She is a Figure and Fitness Universe PRO.  Can you believe she won her pro-card on both divisions on the same year?  WOW!

Bethany has been featured in Oxygen Magazine as a success story and Natural Muscle as well.

On top of all of these impressive fitness accomplishments she is a super talented artist! Bethany hand paints glassware for weddings or any other occasion. I am very lucky to own one of her  amazing pieces.  She custom designed and hand-painted a coffee cup just for me!! I absolutely love it and the picture is below.  Make sure to check out her site but for now here is her interview.

What inspired you to get fit?

I had been sick with chronic pain for a long time and discovered my food allergies and was diagnosed with celiacs (severe allergy to gluten/wheat). This pushed me in the right direction for wanting to change.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Motivated, Dreamer, Resilient

What keeps you motivated to live a healthy life?

Feeling great every day and amazing on stage performing. Accomplishing dreams and goals will always keep me wanting more!

How do you balance life, work, training and family?

My workout time has become my “social time”. Training will always bring me joy when I get to the gym after a long day of work and I get to see my friends and sweat with them.

What do you do for fun?

I love to dance, create artwork, and shop. I could shop full-time if I had the money! I also love to relax with friends, over a cup of coffee, watching TV or at a nice place to eat.

What do you think is think is the biggest misconception about women in fitness?

That we are too extreme, diet too aggressively, that we all look like men, and that we must have an ego. The problem is, there are athletes out there that have created this reputation.

What is your favorite body part to exercise?

My shoulders have always been a favorite body part to train and I’m not sure why they were in the beginning, but now I like them because I’m so strong there. They continue to round out and separate over time!

If you had to pick three key exercises – what would they be and why?

  • The Arnold Press (hits chest, shoulders and triceps)
  • Overhead Lateral Pull Downs (one arm at a time – this grew my lats for a bigger back)
  • Deadlifts with dumbbells or barbell ( I like to switch this up, lately I’ve been going very heavy)

What excites you the most about competing?

The rush of being on stage, feeling the crowd’s energy and competing against yourself is the best! Nothing compares to the satisfaction of improving and accomplishing a goal and giving your all.

What is the best advice you can give someone that is considering entering the competition arena?

The training is not that extreme and intense or at least doesn’t need to be. Take everything day by day, meal by meal, workout by workout and always make it fun!

What are the three things you always have in your gym bag?

  • Headphones (for my iphone to play music)
  • Fitness or fashion magazine for the stepmill.
  • Lipgloss

What is your favorite cheat “treat”?

I make a “sweet potato brownie” in a bowl with melted dark chocolate in the middle and almond butter on top.

Anything else you would like us to know?

Having the body you want is really about what you eat AND how often you eat. Your healthy diet can still be enjoyable and satisfying!
